As I travel around the state on various photo projects, I'm often drawn to farmhouses and barns standing alone in silent dignity. Sometimes forgotten, sometimes serving a purpose for which they weren’t originally intended, these structures each have their own character. It may be southern influences, like 'gingerbread' embellishments on the porch, or the way a tin roof has rusted, or the appearance of vegetation trying to reclaim the building back to the land it once overlooked.

Each time I pass these special places, I notice changes to the surrounding landscapes, namely the subdivision of the land for development and housing. I can’t help but think our heritage is being parceled and sold. With my camera I can at least bear witness to the vestiges of generations past. Our roots grow deep here in the Appalachian soil. The haunting visage of these places remind us of where we come from.

The following images are of farmhouses and barns I've found near the Allegheny Front region of the Monongahela National Forest. This is only the beginning of a personal photography series of farms, farmhouses, and barns. I hope to photograph many more before they disappear.
