Class Q fishing opportunities are opening for the season.
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources believes that the outdoors and outdoor recreation opportunities should be accessible to everyone, no matter their skill or limitations. In support of its commitment to accessibility, the WVDNR has designated nine lakes and three stream sections across West Virginia to operate under Class Q fishing regulations from March through May.
A Class Q Hunting & Fishing Permit is a special permit available to individuals who have permanent and irreversible respiratory, cardiovascular, and/or lower extremity use limitations as certified by a medical professional. Qualifying conditions are spelled out in greater detail on the Class Q Special Hunting and Fishing Permit application form found at wvhunt.com.
When it comes to fishing, these licenses allow access to designated Class Q areas that are normally open to the general public—not including child anglers 14 years of age or younger—but restricted for a certain period of time annually for Class Q permits only. The WVDNR’s 2026 Fishing Regulations Summary, available at WVdnr.gov/fishing/fishing-regulations, further clarifies that fishing is limited to daylight hours only, with a creel limit of four trout.
When the Class Q season is closed, you can still find accessible locations around the state, such as fishing piers and roadside access spots. Visit WVdnr.gov/fishing/class-q-fishing for more information on Class Q fishing sites, accessible fishing piers, and regulations.
