Could there be a better place to celebrate Independence Day than one of West Virginia’s beautiful state parks? In addition to hiking and picnicking, some parks will offer Independence Day programming. Visit wvstateparks.com for a complete guide to July 4 activities across the state.
From spectacular fireworks over the water at Stonewall Resort to the historic Ringing of the Bell ceremony on Blennerhassett Island, celebrations are happening in nearly every park. Cacapon Resort State Park will host a July 4 concert featuring the Morgan Community Concert Band at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, North Bend State Park’s Family-Fun Bash kicks off at Shelter 3. Gates open at 11 a.m. with face painting, tie-dye, food, inflatables, and a cornhole tournament. Head online today to view full event schedules, and start planning your ultimate July 4 weekend in the great outdoors.
Holiday pyrotechnics or no, summer days are made for swimming. Many state parks have beautiful pools, but if you’re craving a lakeside experience, the parks still have you covered. Beech Fork State Park is one such destination, with a designated beach and swim area on Beech Fork Lake. The park is for seasonal day-use, with a parking fee for the lake area. Know before you go: No lifeguards are on duty.
If you’d prefer to stay dry, put some great views on your July 4 road trip list. The Hawks Nest State Park overlook offers a panoramic view of the New River Gorge and the New River below. At Canaan Valley Resort State Park, take a ride in the chair lift to the top of the resort and prepare to be awed. Mountaineer Country’s Coopers Rock State Forest lets you peer down into the Cheat River Gorge.
No matter where you choose to celebrate, do so State Parks–style. The exclusive America250 collection is now available at all State Parks retail and gift shops. The curated selection features limited edition apparel, keepsakes, and collectibles. Every purchase directly supports the preservation and operations of our parks, allowing you to take home a piece of history while giving back to the landscapes you love.
What wild and wonderful ways to spend a holiday!
